Queens Bus Network Map
Reimagining the Queens local bus network map after the Queens Bus Network Redesign
2025
Following the implementation of the Queens Bus Network Redesign (QBNR) in summer 2025, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) introduced a new map of the Queens local bus network. Building on the design principles of the updated subway and rail maps, the new bus map reduces visual clutter, simplifies select features, increases route line thickness, enhances label clarity, and applies color-coding by route type. Together, these updates prioritize legibility and network connections over strict geographic accuracy.
The redesigned map aims to help riders quickly understand how the new Queens network fits together. By emphasizing the hierarchy of routes and the relationships between corridors, rather than every street-level detail, the map reflects the Redesign’s goal of creating a simpler, more navigable bus system.
The map also reflects lessons from earlier stages of the Redesign process. The system map created for the Proposed Final Plan and Proposed Final Plan Addendum marked an initial effort to streamline visual information by diagramming major transit hubs and emphasizing key transfer points. That work established the foundation for a bus map designed for a digital environment—one that allows riders to quickly grasp essential network information. Details that are better conveyed through other interactive platforms, for instance, were intentionally minimized to improve overall clarity and focus on the transit network itself.
Developed in close collaboration between planners and designers, the new map balances design simplicity with functional precision and provides a scalable model for future network updates across the city.
